Queerslang is a Boomslang satellite event that focuses on the LGBTIQQA community of Lexington, highlighting touring acts and community members alike. 2013 marks the third installment of this event, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21 at West Sixth Brewing and Cosmic Charlie’s.
Queerslang activities include an afternoon of free “skillshare” workshops, followed by a late-night dance party. Both events seek to create a safe and inclusive environment for a growing youth populous while introducing them to new ideas and strong members of the Lexington community.
The workshop portion (at The Bread Box / West Sixth Brewing, 2-5 p.m) features 4 one-hour workshops conducted by Lexingtonians on a range of topics; all workshops are free, all-ages and open to the public. Workshop attendees have the opportunity to purchase a wristband for the dance party at half the door cost. The schedule of workshops is as follows:
2:30 – 3:30
- “The ABC’s of Bike Maintenance & Community Building” with Broke Spoke
- “Queer Performance Poetry: A Space To Speak Freely” with Affrilachian poet, Joy Priest
4:00 – 5:00
- “Screen Printing Basics” with Cricket Press
- “Get It! Safer Sex and Consent” with Cheyenne Hohman
This year’s Queerslang dance party (10 p.m., Cosmic Charlie’s) features decorations by guest artist Travis Keene, and a musical line-up featuring visual artist and “lo-fi funk” musician Heatsick; New York’s electro-disco- punk act ITAL; electro-pop conceptual artists The Blow; and local Resonant Hole ambassadors of all things weird and awesome, Jeanne Vomit-Terror & Ed Sunspot.
